Tourist Attractions

The Eastern Cape

You will love the Mediterranean flavour of Cape Town, but the Eastern Cape is where one can start to experience the real Africa : from the unique bushveld thicket of Addo where elephants and the other big 5 roam freely, to the grasslands of Transkei and the marine reserve in Algoa Bay where whales calve and great white sharks lurk, the Eastern Cape offers great holidays and learning experiences.

It is an area filled with history - from the Frontier Wars of the 19th Century between the Xhosa nation and British and German Settlers,  to the political leaders of the new South Africa, it will reveal its secrets to the eager visitor. It counts as its proudest sons Nelson Mandela and "Steve Biko".

Addo

Addo is situated 60km north of Port Elizabeth. It is the home of the famous Addo Elephant National Park, home to more than 400 elephants, as well as Lion, Buffalo, Rhino and Leopard. A history of the Addo elephants shows both the destructive and compassionate nature of man.  In 1919, the Administrator of the Cape Province issued instructions for the ‘destruction of the entire herd’ of elephants.

By the following year only 15 panicstricken and bewildered animals were left. These animals became the backbone of the now protected herd, and their numbers have grown steadily ever since.

Addo is the centre of three thriving industries-  conservation, tourism and farming.  From our farms citrus fruits are exported around the world. The tourism sector offers a number of pubs and restaurants as well as a crocodile farm and a reptile and raptor centre.
